This was the first statistical study of the wages of unskilled labour in the USA and documents a 50 per cent increase in the wages of such workers over the last half of the nineteenth century. According to Abbott, such a study was a ‘first step toward a complete history of wages’ (p. 325). Eventually Abbott would write a large portion of the history of US wages and employment, centring particularly on women. Breckinridge’s course on the legal and economic position of women had prompted Abbott to wonder about the history of women in the labour force.
Abbott believed strongly that graduate students should have access to primary sources in their research and studies. Noting a particular difficulty in obtaining original documents on immigration issues, she set out to become an expert on contemporary and historical immigration documents and edited two important collections, Immigration: Select Documents and Case Records (1924) and Historical Aspects of the Immigration Problem: Select Documents (1926). In 1927, Abbott and Breckinridge jointly established the distinguished academic journal, Social Service Review, published by the University of Chicago Press.
