Discussion The goals of this study were to corroborate the observations made in an earlier study concerning the formation of bubbles with zinc-rich interior surfaces in glazes containing carbon containing contaminants, to determine the general behavior of some typical metal contaminants in a fast-fire system, and to use thermodynamics to try to understand the observations. As noted in the introduction, these goals were achieved.
The stability of aluminum oxide significantly alters the reaction path of the glaze. Figure 6 contains a micrograph of a bubble in the aluminum metal-doped glaze. The material found in this, and other bubbles in this glaze, contains silica, wollastanite, and other glaze raw materials. 10 One of the motivations for this study was to verify the observation reported in a previous paper' that carbonaceous contaminants in zinc-bearing glazes can cause bubble formation because the bubbles contain a high concentration of zinc on their inner surfaces.
