The Albuquerque conference middle was once the venue for the 1993 Cryogenic Engineering convention. The assembly used to be held together with the overseas Cryogenic fabrics convention. Walter F. Stewart, of Los Alamos nationwide Laboratory, used to be convention chairman. Albuquerque is close to Los Alamos nationwide Laboratory which has been an important contributor to the cryogenics neighborhood because the early days of the new york venture. Albuquerque is usually the house of the Air Force's Phillips Laboratory which has a lead function in constructing cryocoolers. this system consisted of 322 CEC papers, greater than a 30% bring up from CEC-91 and 20% greater than CEC-89. This used to be the most important variety of papers ever submitted to the CEC. of those, 249 papers are released the following, in quantity 39 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. once more the amount is released in books. This quantity encompasses a cumulative index for the CEC volumes from 1975-1993 (volumes 21,23,25,27,29,31,33,35,37, and 39 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering). the 1st 20 volumes are listed in quantity 20. A better half cumulative index for the ICMC volumes (volumes 22 via forty) appears to be like in quantity forty. this is often my first quantity as editor. i wouldn't were in a position to have performed it with no the help of the numerous reviewers. specifically favored used to be the guide left me through the former editor, Ron Fast.

This paper reviews the development of maglev and steel-wheel-on-steel-rail trains and examines the unique right-of-way requirements for these systems. S. efforts in this field. S. systems are discussed. Five of these systems use superconducting magnets. The trend in the demand for intercity transportation capacity is reviewed, and the need for maglev to supplement or replace short-haul aircraft is discussed in terms of its competitiveness in travel time, capacity to transport large numbers of passengers, and environmental considerations, including energy, emissions, land use, and noise.

Finally, they all provide for reducing the magnetic field in the passenger cabin to environmentally acceptable levels; a feature not included in the MLU 002 vehicle. All systems have the capacity to transport 4000 passengers/h in each direction, and all contractors evaluated means of expanding the capacity to 12,000 passengerslh. 8 Bechtel Team The Bechtel team comprised Bechtel, Hughes Electronics, the Electromotive Division of General Motors, the MIT, and Charles Draper Laboratories, designed a system using guideway coils configured as ladders attached to the sides of a "box" beam.

In the case where the transport current is provided by a persistent current in the coil, the source of the dissipated transport energy loss is the magnetic energy stored in the coil itself. Assuming this coil is not further linked electromagnetically to other sources, the dissipation of the stored coil energy will result in decay of the persistent current. This paper presents the frrst analysis and experiment to study this effect. For the experiment, an apparatus consisting of a persistent current loop and energizing coil was constructed, and persistent current decay was measured under high AC field swings at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory at MIT.
