Anyone who is overweight and has been trying to lose weight for some time now would know the importance of exercise in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and also to maintain weight loss for the long term. However many are not aware of the importance of strength training in the process of weight loss.

While cardio-aerobic exercises are necessary and highly effective for weight loss, strength training and working with weights is equally necessary. Strength training, also called by some as weight training, is an exercise which uses weights or resistance to strengthen the body's skeleton and muscles.

This improves endurance, muscle tone, and also lean body tissue. Strength exercises can include pulling weights, climbing stairs, doing pushups, rowing, etc. While fitness equipment may be necessary for some exercises, it can also be performed without investing into the equipment, and simply following a strength training exercise routine. The best weight loss results are obtained for both strength training and regular cardio-aerobic exercises.

Benefit of Strength Training

The benefit of strength training is that these exercises increase the body's metabolic rate and thus burns more calories and increases the amount of lean muscle mass. Strength training will also improve the connectivity between bones and connective tissues. While it is not necessary to suddenly include a large quantity of strength training in your regular workout, adding just a bit of weight training to your workout can help you to achieve the desired results.

A common myth among most individuals is that strength training is not for women. On the contrary, strength training will prevent women from bulking up and it will have the same benefits in reducing weight as it does in men.
